What you will be doing?

The future Group Environment Director will be responsible for managing environmental risk of former mining and industrial sites. In addition to this will be in charge of EHS-related aspects of M&A projects so that Umicore’s exposure to legal and financial liabilities is optimized and Umicore’s reputation is preserved.

 

Main areas of responsibility:

  • Help Umicore’s sites and former mining facilities reduce its impact on the environment and pollution prevention
  • Evaluate the existing situation of former sites and understand the environmental challenges/risks and recommend solutions
  • Map entire environment portfolio worldwide, discuss present status, progress with local responsible staff, evaluate existing provisions and future needs
  • Work together with external stakeholders like government institutions, authorities, associations and ensuring that all activities are handled in accordance with federal/central and state laws and regulations related to environmental protection
  • Engaging with Umicore’s corporate departments like legal, communication, sites/plants and business units and ensure structured communication with internal and external stakeholders
  • Promote awareness of environmental issues within Umicore and also for upcoming new sites/plants
  • Conceptualizing and implementing environmental policies, procedures, standards and guidelines to ensure compliance with state and federal laws as required
  • M&A projects: take the lead of EHS aspects in ongoing and future M&A projects, supported by external consultants and in accordance with existing internal procedures
    • Identify and valuate existing and future liabilities
    • In case of an acquisition, advice whether identified liabilities represent a deal breaker or not
    • Assist corporate development and legal departments in drafting EHS clauses of the transaction contracts

 

You are an ideal candidate for us as you:

  • Hold a University degree in geology or bio-engineering or environmental engineering or chemistry
  • Have gathered at least 15+ years of experience in managing environmental issues at sites and M&A projects with mining (related to minerals & metal) industries
  • Have profound knowledge of risk-based land management (risk assessment methodologies and science behind it) and remediation technologies
  • Have gained experience of environmental legislation in different countries and at EU-level: contaminated soil and groundwater, mining and post-mining, waste, air, water…
  • Have analytical & conceptual capabilities and problem-solving skills accompanied by strong organizational skills
  • Are able to think out of the box to find defendable, original and cost effective solutions
  • Are an experienced leader and show strong interest in people management, being people motivator
  • Have working experience with multi-cultural teams and passionate about diversity
  • Possess excellent communication, negotiation, relational and inspirational skills
  • Work result-oriented and are performance driven with a strong passion band drive to win
  • Are stress resistance / Resilience
  • Are perfectly 3-lingual Dutch, French, English
  • Are willing to travel
