About Cobalt and Specialty Materials

Mastering the cobalt value chain.  Umicore’s expertise covers the sourcing, production, and distribution of cobalt and nickel products.  Umicore’s materials are at the heart of products we use every day such as rechargeable batteries, tools, paints, and tires.  Our recycling and refining processes give new life to cobalt and other metals and reduce environmental impacts.  To meet the demands of our customers we cannot stand still.  We need to find new ways of doing things, discover new solutions and develop new ideas. What you will be doing

As our Chemical Process Engineer, you will be responsible for managing all technological aspects of chemical production projects from feasibility determinations to commercialization.  You will also facilitate continuous improvement through optimization of manufacturing processes to promote safety, improve yield, and lower costs.  Specifically, you will:

  • Provide technical expertise in the development of new commercial activities, working with the Commercial Manager and procurement teams to analyze opportunities and develop new production processes;
  • Analyze current processes and data, developing methods to improve processes in terms of safety, yields, and reduction of costs and/or wastes;
  • Provide process technical support on all CAPEX and improvement projects;
  • Troubleshoot and resolve process-related production issues;
  • Train production operators on new processes and products;
  • Other duties as needed.

Who we are looking for

Our success is based on individuals who are ready to make the most of their skills and prepared to tackle any challenges they face.  For this position, we'll be looking for:

  • A Bachelor's degree in Chemistry or Chemical engineering, or comparable skills, knowledge, and expertise gained through relevant work experience;  
  • Prefer minimum of 2 years of experience in chemical processing production; 
  • Technical competence in inorganic chemistry, chemical processes, and chemical processing equipment;
  • Experience with metal based inorganic chemistry is a plus;
  • Experience executing risk analysis (PHA, HAZOP); 
  • Good problem-solving skills with the ability to identify and develop new ideas and initiatives, and turn ideas into practical working system and procedures; and,
  • Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel.
