About Umicore Battery Materials in Canada

Umicore is preparing to build a battery materials production plant in Loyalist Township, Ontario - the first of its kind in North America. The cutting-edge facility will be a critical part of Canada’s electric vehicle (EV) supply chain. Throughout the design, construction, and operation of the plant, Umicore will be seeking a variety of professionals who share our passion for innovation and sustainability.

 

What you will be doing

For this new site, we are looking for an Automation Manager reporting to the Asset Maintenance Manager. In this role you will be responsible for providing direct supervision and guidance to the team, ensuring the reliable operation and continuous improvement of the automation systems within the Loyalist site

 

 

Responsibilities

  • Supporting the selection of, and providing direct supervision, mentorship, and guidance to the team of Automation Engineers and the PI Administrator
  • Coordinating with the Engineering team to facilitate the smooth handover of DCS/SCADA/PLC/PI functionalities to the Automation team
  • Collaborating with engineering during the design phase of the project to ensure that operational excellence is implemented into the design (alarm rationalization, high performance graphics, etc.) and programs are set up to ensure continuous improvement (management of change for automation, alarm and functionality improvements)
  • Collaborating with the Automation Engineers to develop and implement best practices for system configuration, monitoring, and troubleshooting
  • Working with cross-functional teams, such as Operations, Engineering, and IT, to align automation initiatives with organizational goals

 

Who we are looking for

  • You have a degree in Automation or Electrical Engineering or other related discipline
  • Hands-on experience with Automation System Implementation: including DCS, SCADA, PLC, and HMI. This includes designing, programming, and configuring automation systems to meet specific operational requirements
  • Proven experience in leading and managing a team of automation engineers and administrators.  This includes assigning tasks, providing guidance and support, conducting performance evaluations, and fostering a collaborative work environment.
  • Expertise in integrating various automation systems, ensuring seamless communication and data exchange between different components as well as in optimizing automation processes to improve efficiency, reliability, and productivity.
  • Familiarity with industry standards and protocols related to automation, such as OPC, Modbus,  and Ethernet/IP.
  • Project management skills and the ability to manage multiple priorities
  • Communication with internal and external stakeholders and relationship building
  • Ability to organize and coach his/her team and to organize project teams
  • Ability to effectively prioritize tasks, delegate responsibilities, and manage resources
  • This role’s onboarding program includes 3 months training in Europe.
