About Umicore Battery Materials in Canada

Umicore is preparing to build a battery materials production plant in Loyalist Township, Ontario - the first of its kind in North America. The cutting-edge facility will be a critical part of Canada’s electric vehicle (EV) supply chain. Throughout the design, construction, and operation of the plant, Umicore will be seeking a variety of professionals who share our passion for innovation and sustainability.

 

What you will be doing

For this new site, we are looking for a Cost Engineering Manager, reporting to the Senior Engineering Controls Manager. In this role you will responsible for the planning, development & management of the capital expenditure (CapEx) cost associated with projects related to our region, from the early phases of development until the closure of the same. This role involves the early definition of project budgets and budget management during design and implementation phases, thus ensuring that capital projects are submitted for approval with accuracy, are completed within budget, and actual costs are captured in libraries for future use. 

 

Responsibilities

  • Partners with Global Advanced Planning in the development & ownership of the CapEx budget for projects & program at the early phases of the programs.  
  • Benchmarking of internal historic databases associated with previous program as well as external benchmarking leveraging public references as well as EPCM knowledge platforms
  • Development & maintenance of CapEx optimization metrics (density, commitment, spend KPI) that capture impact of lessons learned on execution and as well optimization on procurement and/or thruput strategies. 
  • Support with Treasury/Finance as part of technical and budget assessment for loans or investment partnership(s). 
  • Support Internal & External Financial compliance Audits associated CapEx Budgets & investment enabling update of CapEx procedures/standards/processes as PR approval leveraging digital platforms such as SharePoint Online and Plannisware. 
  • Collaborates with Procurement on Vendor/Supplier  in the evaluation of quotations and proposals from suppliers, subcontractors, and vendors to enable accuracy of Costing Database 
  • Prepare and present detailed, insightful cost reports to project teams in collaboration with Capex Controlling 
  • Make recommendations to address cost-related risks and opportunities to leadership 


 

Who we are looking for

  • University degree , or equivalent qualification, in Civil, Mechanical, Chemical, Electrical or other Engineering discipline, with additional project management training considered an asset
  • 3 to 7 years as project manager or project CapEx controller, ideally with some experience in Automotive (APQP) or Material/Mining Industry 
  • Technical experience and/or background in the execution of engineering projects (of specialties above mentioned) & relevant experience and understanding in the execution of industrial projects in operational environments. 
  • Knowledge of CapEx budget and estimation standards, with desired proficiency in international or national certifications (such as AACE). 
  • Knowledge of industrial project trades and the interactions between all trades (project management, construction management, civil/building/facilities, electrical, piping, process, equipment and start-up activities). 
  • Desired Proficiency in the use of Portfolio Management tools such as Primavera P6 or Planisware Version 7. 
  • Desired Proficiency in spreadsheet & dashboard applications, such as MS Power BI. MS Excel & Tableau.
