About Umicore Battery Materials in Canada

Umicore is preparing to build a battery materials production plant in Loyalist Township, Ontario - the first of its kind in North America. The cutting-edge facility will be a critical part of Canada’s electric vehicle (EV) supply chain. Throughout the design, construction, and operation of the plant, Umicore will be seeking a variety of professionals who share our passion for innovation and sustainability.

 

What you will be doing

For this new site, we are looking for a Senior Construction Manager, reporting to the Regional Program Director. In this role you will responsible for envisioning, enabling, engaging and executing all construction related planning, strategy and field activity in close partnership with Umicore project leadership and key leaders with our EPCM partner, to deliver safe, productive, timely and on-budget construction-related aspects of a multi-billion dollar industrial project, in support of Umicore’s major expansion plans in Canada.

 

Responsibilities

  • Develops Construction related strategies for planning, resourcing and executing overall construction scope of the project 
  • Leads Constructability Reviews, including table-top construction scenario planning, developing and challenging assumptions, and ensuring issues are resolved prior to mobilizing field construction resources
  • Liaises with other areas such as Global Engineering, Process Technology, EHS, Operations, Operational Excellence, or other Umicore BUs (e.g. Battery Materials Refining), to integrate requirements and knowledge into the construction strategy
  • Responsible to scrutinize, challenge, and hold accountable, multiple 3rd party contractors on scope, schedule and cost to deliver scope blocks on time and in budget 
  • Reviews and approves technical documentation in the execution phases of projects, guaranteeing that safe, cost-effective solutions are implemented, using best available standards and guidelines. 
  • Oversee the design, construction, and warranty handover of projects to ensure projects are completed in accordance with design, budget, and schedule objectives 
  • Develop and maintain pre-construction schedules, baseline construction schedules, procurement schedules, commissioning and PDI schedules 
  • Leads and Enables the technical expert team to prepare, revise and approve technical documentation in the construction phases of projects, by Developing and Upholding the RACI matrix for efficient decision-making and execution of tasks between multiple projects/programs which may have competing priorities  while detecting and overcoming roadblocks
     

 

Who we are looking for

  • University degree, or equivalent qualification, in Construction, Mechanical, Electrical, Civil or other Engineering, augmented by construction field-specific training, certification or accreditations.
  • At least 20 years of progressive construction leadership experience across multiple assignments, ideally with 10+ years’ experience in leading construction activity for $1B+ megaprojects in Automotive, Oil & Gas, or Material/Mining Industries
  • Technical experience and/or background in the construction of engineering projects (of specialties above mentioned) & relevant experience and understanding in the execution of industrial projects in operational environments. 
  • Expert knowledge of construction-related EHS standards, industry good practices and legal requirements applicable to the specialty of focus. 
  • Knowledge of industrial project trades and the interactions between all trades (project management, construction management, civil/building/facilities, electrical, piping, process, equipment and start-up activities). 
  • Strong communication and leadership skills, able to coach, guide, and inspire teams
  • Strong collaboration and problem solving skills are critical in this role
