About Rechargeable Battery Materials in Canada
Umicore is preparing to build a battery materials production plant in Loyalist Township, Ontario - the first of its kind in North America. The cutting-edge facility will be a critical part of Canada’s electric vehicle (EV) supply chain. Throughout the design, construction, and operation of the plant, Umicore will be seeking a variety of professionals who share our passion for innovation and sustainability.
What you will be doing
For this new site, we are looking for a Technical Analytical Lab Manager, reporting to the Analytical Lab Manager. In this role you will be responsible for leading the team of specialists within the analytical lab of the RBM Canada Loyalist site and for the reliability of physical, chemical & electrochemical tests for all analytical equipment. You support local implementations/testing of global projects coming from the ACC organization, and lead technical improvements within the lab.
Responsibilities
Secure reliability of Physical, chemical & electrochemical analyses by:

- Reviewing and Approving the validity of analysis and reporting to relevant departments
- Analyzing equipment reliability on regular basis and propose/execute projects for improvement, when needed
- Secure planning, scheduling and execution of analysis and equipment quality monitoring by using the appropriate statistical tools (SPC,LOD/LOQ, MSA, 6 sigma), and review the data regularly
- Assess lab environment and facilities to satisfy requirements towards Quality and EHS in global standardization and initiate improvement projects, when needed
- Ensure the timely review of relevant SOP and instructions according to the quality system
Support ACC Projects

- Support global analytical development and analytical excellence projects that are managed by the ACC team and run across the BU laboratories
Secure Safety, training, supervising and communication

- When conducting the new SOP development and implementation, consider potential EHS issues and minimize them upon operation
- Ensure appropriate training for the team members about new and improved SOPs and related EHS information
- Supervise and deploy technical team members and promote team atmosphere
- Communicate with other departments to make cooperative relationship
Ensures technical quality compliance by:

- Following the quality management system in compliance with ISO 9001, ISO 14001, ISO 45001, IATF 16949 and ISO17025
- Assure registration of SOP (Standard Operating Procedure) in QDMS
- Ensure regular review of analytical SOP’s in compliance with the quality system
Who we are looking for
-
- Scientific Bachelor or Master Degree (e.g. chemistry) with a minimum of 2-3 years of working experience in laboratory management and analytical characterization techniques
- Knowledge and understanding of chemistry and chemical analysis
- Background knowledge of the various equipment used (ICP, PSD, KF, Titrator, BET, TD, SEM, XRF, C/S, XRD)
- Good analytical and problem-solving skills, able to conduct root cause analysis
- Knowledge of lab safety control
- Experience with statistical methods and tools (e/g/ Minitab)
- Knowledge of method development methodologies and validation of analysis
- Knowledge of IATF 16949 and ISO/IEC 17025.
- Knowledge of core tools and processes like MSA, FMEA, SPC, APQP and PPAP.
- Knowledge of analysis/testing related standards (ASTM, EN, DIN, ISO…)
- Knowledge of more advanced digital tools, such as PowerBi is a plus
- Analytical thinking, critical mindset and problem-solving ability
- Enthusiastic team player with an open "can do" mentality

- Proven ability to coordinate teams and projects
