About Cobalt & Specialty Materials
Mastering the cobalt value chain. Umicore’s expertise covers the sourcing, production and distribution of cobalt and nickel products. Your Key Accountabilities
As Business Unit EHS Expert in Cobalt & Specialty Materials (CSM), you play a key role in translating Umicore’s EHS ambition into tangible results across our sites. You combine BU-level coordination with strong operational proximity, helping leaders and teams make EHS excellence part of everyday decision-making.
At BU level, you:
- Translate Group, Business Group and Business Unit’s EHS ambitions into a focused BU strategic and tactical roadmap with clear priorities and measurable outcomes.
- Align, challenge, optimize and support site EHS strategies to ensure consistent, high-quality implementation across all locations and an approach supporting our ambition of zero harm.
- Identify and address BU-wide EHS risks and performance trends using audits, data and site insights, including regular field presence and field coaching.
- Drive performance management through KPIs, reviews and actionable, transparent and timely reporting for BU leadership.
- Stimulate innovation, EHS courage, collaboration and accountability at all levels to elevate EHS performance.
- Act as a trusted EHS advisor to BU management and represent the BU in Group EHS forums.
- Identify required competencies and foster EHS knowledge growth both within the EHS community as well as within the business teams. Support upskilling journey for EHS.
- Bring in external insights, benchmarking, and best practices from other industries to inspire progress.
At site level, you:
- Coach site management and EHS teams to translate standards, permits and legal requirements into robust local practices.
- Participate in risk analyses, safety walks, audits and incident investigations to strengthen shop-floor risk control.
- Promote strong safety leadership and ownership throughout line management and teams.
- Support targeted improvement initiatives in process safety, occupational safety and health, environment and emergency preparedness.
You will functionally report to the Business Group EHS lead for Specialty Materials, and in full line to the BU business lead.
Your place of work will be Olen with regular travel to the other site locations of the BU.
Who we are looking for
- A Master’s degree in a technical, scientific or engineering discipline, or equivalent experience.
- Certified Safety Specialist qualification (PA Level 1) is required.
- Minimum 5 years of proven EHS experience in a process-industry environment, preferably across multiple sites.
- Strong knowledge of EHS legislation, risk management and management systems.
- The ability to influence, coach and engage stakeholders at all levels.
- A pragmatic professional who combines strategic thinking with hands-on credibility.
- Strong communication skills and fluency in Dutch and English; additional languages are an asset.
- Willingness to travel to the different sites of the Business Unit.
