Position Summary
The Training Coordinator is responsible for developing, coordinating, and administering all employee onboarding and technical training programs to ensure employees are competent, qualified, and compliant before performing work independently. This position plays a critical role in maintaining Umicore’s commitment to safety, operational excellence, quality, and regulatory compliance by ensuring all personnel receive standardized training on plant safety requirements, operating procedures, and job-specific competencies.
The Training Coordinator partners closely with Operations, EHS, Maintenance, Quality, Engineering, and Human Resources to develop a highly skilled workforce capable of safely operating catalyst manufacturing processes while maintaining compliance with company standards and regulatory requirements.
Key Responsibilities
Safety Onboarding & Compliance
- Lead all new employee safety orientation programs.
- Coordinate onboarding for employees, contractors, interns, and temporary personnel.
- Ensure completion of required EHS training before personnel enter production areas.
- Coordinate training for:
- Hazard Communication
- Process Safety Management (PSM)
- Lockout/Tagout
- Confined Space
- Hot Work
- Respiratory Protection
- PPE Requirements
- Emergency Response
- Chemical Handling
- Waste Management
- Environmental Compliance
- Maintain training records to support OSHA, EPA, ISO, and internal audits.
- Schedule recurring annual and regulatory-required refresher training.
Operations Training
- Coordinate technical onboarding for all Process Operators.
- Develop structured qualification plans for each production area.
- Ensure operators demonstrate competency before working independently.
- Coordinate work area training on:
- Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs)
- Batch Records
- Work Instructions
- Process Flow
- Critical Control Points
- Equipment Operation
- Quality Requirements
- GMP/Documentation Practices
- Housekeeping Standards
- Maintain training matrices for every manufacturing area.
- Coordinate cross-training initiatives to improve workforce flexibility.
Competency Management
- Develop operator qualification checklists.
- Coordinate written and practical competency evaluations.
- Track employee progress through qualification milestones.
- Maintain certification records for equipment and process qualifications.
- Identify skill gaps and recommend additional training.
Learning & Development
- Develop engaging classroom and hands-on training materials.
- Create presentations, videos, visual work instructions, and job aids.
- Assist departments with development and revision of SOPs and training documents.
- Support implementation of electronic Learning Management Systems (LMS) and digital training records.
- Promote continuous learning throughout the organization.
Continuous Improvement
- Monitor training effectiveness using KPIs.
- Analyze training gaps associated with incidents, quality deviations, and operational performance.
- Participate in Root Cause Analyses and recommend training improvements.
- Standardize training across all production areas.
- Support Lean Manufacturing and Operational Excellence initiatives.
Qualifications and Education
Required Qualifications
- Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Industrial Technology, Manufacturing, Safety, Engineering, Education, or related field preferred.
- Minimum 3 years of experience in manufacturing, chemical processing, pharmaceutical, catalyst, or industrial operations.
- Experience developing and delivering technical training programs.
- Strong understanding of OSHA regulations and manufacturing safety practices.
- Experience with SOP development and document control.
- Proficient with Microsoft Office and Learning Management Systems (LMS).
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in chemical or catalyst manufacturing.
- Knowledge of Process Safety Management (PSM).
- Experience with ISO 9001, ISO 14001, or similar quality systems.
- Familiarity with SAP or other ERP systems.
- Experience with electronic training management systems.
- Lean Manufacturing or Continuous Improvement experience.
